The original centre was built in 1991 to cater for the Lake Hawea village which had developed after the lake was raised in the 1960′s. The centre is a focal point for local community life, incorporating the library and providing supporting facilities for the adjoining sports field, bowling green, tennis/netball courts and children’s playground.
By 2011 the centre was inadequate for the needs of the fast growing Hawea community, so the community embarked on a fund raising program to raise over 1.6 million dollars to substantially extend and upgrade the facility.
These extensions were completed in 2013 and the facility was opened in March of that year.
Hawea is very proud of its new extended centre, and offers it for hire to locals and visitors to the Upper Clutha region.
